Comforting mourners, walking with them in the shadow of their grief, is among the most important and sacred deeds in which we engage as a community—and it truly does take a community to be able to do it. While our rabbis lead Shiva services as often as they are available, we regularly need lay leaders to perform this mitzvah when they are unable to do so. In this workshop, Rabbi Alexander will provide participants with the context and skills to be able to lead a meaningful Shiva service. Each participant will have the opportunity to join our team of lay leaders that might be called upon to lead Shiva services as needed, though a commitment to do so is not a prerequisite to attend and learn in this workshop.
