The State of Israel is a vibrant, pulsating, historic, energetic, challenging and challenged heart of the Jewish People. Did we mention layered, complex and beautiful? Join us for a journey through the history of the young State. While we recognize that starting at THE  beginning may necessitate a few extra sessions, we will begin our journey with the early days of Zionism. Creating a foundation of knowledge that will take us through the turn of the century, and the British mandate period, we will be better equipped to experience the founding of the State, together. As we traverse that Mt. Sinai-esque moment in 1948, we will continue through the earlier and more recent decades of the State of Israel, engaging with the momentous occasions, the prideful peaks and precarious pitfalls that accompany a living and breathing entity, such as the Jewish State. As we conclude and look to the future, we will have had an opportunity to strengthen what we already know about Israel, add information that wasn’t previously there, and regardless of our opinions about Israel, be able to ask ourselves (and maybe even answer), how does all this relate to us and why do we care?

December 3:  Wandering Dixie: Dispatches from the Lost Jewish SouthWith author  of the book, Sue Eisenfeld.
This program is in conjunction with the College of Charleston Jewish Studies, Center for Southern Jewish Culture.   From Charleston to Arkansas, she explores the small towns where Jewish people once lived and thrived. She visits the site of her distant cousin and civil rights activist Andrew Goodman’s murder during 1964’s Freedom Summer. She also talks with the only Jews remaining in some of the “lost” places, from Selma to the Mississippi Delta to Natchitoches, and visits areas with no Jewish community left—except for an old temple or overgrown cemetery. Eisenfeld follows her curiosity about Jewish Confederates and casts an unflinching eye on early southern Jews’ participation in slavery. Her travels become a journey of revelation about our nation’s fraught history and a personal reckoning with the true nature of America. Purchase the book HERE.

December 17:  Grandparenting Children In Interfaith Families.   The speaker will be our own Rabbi Stephanie Alexander.
You love your grandchildren. You love your grandchildren’s parents – both your child and his/her spouse, as well. And you would love to be able to share your Jewish heritage and values with your grandchildren. Is there a way to do so while still preserving what may sometimes feel like the fragile harmony that keeps everything in balance? If this question resonates with you, join us as we draw upon the insights of the Union for Reform Judaism’s decades of outreach work as well as the lived experience within our own community.

We hope you will join us!
