CAJM Nehemiah Action

Monday, April 15, 2024 7 Nisan 5784

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM7396 Rivers Ave., North Charleston

Help KKBE bring 275 congregants, family, and friends to the 12th Annual Nehemiah Action!

Many children don't succeed in school because they lack the building blocks needed for reading. A quality preschool education can help children achieve these skills but CCSD wasn't providing that education to every child who needed it; in fact there were OVER 300 students on a waiting list for the 4-K program. So, in 2013, with 1500 people at our Nehemiah Action, CAJM asked CCSD to expand the program so no student was left behind. Since then over 2000 students have had access to a quality 4-K program that gives them the skills they need to become lifetime readers.

Black, brown and students with special needs are routinely suspended from school at much higher rates (often 8-10x higher) than white students. To address this inequity, with 1700 people at our 2014 Nehemiah Action, CAJM pushed the district to implement Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports and Restorative Practices. These programs help to reduce suspension rates and improve the overall school climate. Since then, over 1000 staff have been trained in Restorative Practices and $250,000 in federal funding has been allocated towards a district-wide implementation plan.

And on April 15th, with a goal of 2000 people in attendance, CAJM will again address education by holding the school board accountable for fair, equitable and inclusive policies.

Come, join with KKBE, as we SHOW UP to make a better future for our children.

CAJM is an interfaith, multiracial grassroots organization established in 2012 to unite the Charleston community around social justice issues. Over the past decade, we have brought together thousands of Lowcountry residents to build relationships, research problems, develop solutions, and demand accountability on systemic matters impacting families. Through faith in action and broad-based membership now representing 40 diverse congregations, we give the most impacted communities a platform to drive policy reform. At the Action, we will be celebrating the establishment of an affordable housing trust fund while continuing to push for environmental justice and a more equitable school system.

Come out for a night of pursuing JUSTICE as we celebrate KKBE's incredible 275 year history!
